□ Name: Misato Katsuragi
□ Journal: [personal profile] enlister
□ Series: Neon Genesis Evangelion
□ Canon point: Episode 19
□ History: History thanks to EvangelionWiki
□ Personality:

One person is not defined by one trait. The complexity that is Neon Genesis Evangelion carries over from the plot to its characters. Misato Katsuragi is no exception. She has so many traits that are so polar opposite, it's hard to think a human like that can be functional. However, Misato is the definition of the word 'functional'.

We are introduced to Misato in episode one with a teasing, yet provocative image of her given to Shinji so he'll recognize her. She's dressed in shorts and a low-cut top and the image scribbled with an arrow towards her cleavage that states the words 'Look at this!'. This is her first impression. It's almost a red herring! The truth of the matter is, Misato has a rich side of her that offers both a flirty, aloof archetype and a serious, capable militant side.

At Nerv, Misato is shown to be professional and willing to give order and directions. Her role is to help oversee the development of the battle against Angels through the use of Eva (or Evangelions). Throughout the series, Misato is shown to be capable of executing tactical and thought-out plans in battle that work for the benefit of their organization and the pilots of the Eva units. When large-scale (as in, city-wide) battle ensues, Misato is usually one of the first people to begin taking the initiative and directing Shinji, Rei, and Asuka. Utilizing the information she receives so quickly (such as: the Angel's fighting patterns, the area of the battle, the status of the pilots and other variables), Misato leads her 'team' with tactical strategies. Her quick choices are partnered with her guts and understanding of the severity of their goals. In her mind, Nerv is attempting to prevent an Angel invasion, something that could bring upon the end of the world. The effort she puts into her work is well-received and she is promoted within her rank to Major.

Despite her tough exterior in the work place, Misato is a very friendly woman. With  experience of being the "party girl" in college, Misato takes this loose and relaxed personality to her thirties. She shows value in her relationships with others. She has a casual relationship with Ritsuko, the head of the technology department at Nerv. The two went to college and were fast friends, still working side-by-side. Now, she is falling into a maternal or "big sister" role to the young pilots (specifically Shinji and then Asuka). In contrast to her strict working side, she has less control at her own home. Leaving dirty dishes and empty bowls around her apartment and drinking freely during all hours of the day, Misato shows her youthfulness best here. It's seriously like her responsibilities wash away once she leaves Nerv HQ. She's painted as a woman that is unable to "grow up", despite her intense dedication to the battle against Angels. She flirts with men (not seriously), goes through beer like it's nothing, and wears tight and highly feminizing outfits. Her untidy and unkempt house is still shared with anyone willing to accept her as a roommate. It's hard to even see how WORK-Misato and HOME-Misato are the same person, but she is. And her friends are often very understanding of that. This part of her personality is very important to her because it allows her a bit of "normalcy" in her life. Originally, after the Second Impact occurred (an incident that killed her father and a large portion of the human population), Misato was left traumatized at the tender age of sixteen. Physically, she is scarred from below her breast down her stomach from the Second Impact, but mentally she was left disconnected. Spending 2 years under surveillance at Nerv and unable to speak, Misato was distant and unable to make emotional connections. However, she would attend college and begin her life anew. In a sense, Misato feels like she ran away from the trauma, which brings up conflict. It's unsure how she 'blossomed' in college and began speaking, but one thing was for certain: Misato wanted to control her life.

During her college days, she meets Ritsuko Akagi and the two develop a fond friendship. She was much as she is outside of work, friendly and quite flagrant. She skips a week of school and meeting Ritsuko to sleep with her new boyfriend. Oddly enough, the person who helps create the most tension in her life is Ryoji Kaji, her ex-boyfriend from college.

Once he delivers Asuka to Japan, the two are reunited in a less-than-romantic way. She's shown irritated by his presence, often losing her social attitude and becoming frustrated at her personality because of him. Well, mostly because of what she *did* to him. The truth is, she feels as if she's running away. Her insight after a (of course, drunken) night with Kaji let's the viewers know that. Turns out, Misato had huge father issues that she still has not come to terms with. Despite hating her father for not being there in her and her mother's life, she holds a bitterness that he saved her life during the Second Impact. Since then, she has been alone. It's not until college that she meets and connects with Kaji. They were so enamoured with each other and for the first time, she was truly happy. Despite their two-year stint, Misato couldn't bear to be hurt by another man like her father.  She sets herself up for a self-destructive pattern that leads her to ruining her image of being a perfect girl, knowing it never garnered the attention she wanted (ie: her father). The two separate and eventually both work for Gehirn (which later becomes Nerv).

Because of her father's death during the Second Impact, Misato copes with his poor parental role in her life by taking care of others. Doing a good job of taking care of Asuka and Shinji, it is when Kaji re-enters her life that she realizes she doesn't take care of herself. She puts on a brave face because she doesn't want to lose anyone else. Despite making logical and tactical choices in Nerv, this is when she begins to show her compassion. She refuses to allow Shinji and Asuka to be harmed. Misato views the Angels as the source of all conflict in her life. It caused her father to be killed and most importantly, it has kept other from being happy. Shinji, especially. She is full of hate and wants to see this mission successful not for the hope of humanity, but for her own "selfish" goals.

Her "daddy issues" and inability to open up to people creates her own problematic loneliness. It develops her into someone who is dependent on sex (i.e; Kaji to feel needed) and her problems with seeing relationships further than face value. For someone who remained mute for two years, she is assumed to be fully healed both mentally and physically. However, Misato has not fully healed from the trauma of the Second Impact. Instead, she is scarred in both senses of the word: physical and mental. College allowed Misato to open up, but she still showed the inability to effectively hold relationships. Her own hangups keep people at arm's length, despite how lonely she feels.

Misato at her root remains a character with the inability to truly open up herself to people. Friendliness is not to be mistaken as honesty, as she often finds herself weak and unable to say how she feels. Able to care and nurture her friends, she refuses to let anyone do the same for her. Her inability to commit and connect with people past familiarity brings major hang-ups (especially with comforting Shinji and reuniting her relationship with Kaji). She's afraid of being hurt and terrified of being vulnerable. Separating her work and personal life creates a divide that allows her to not get too close to someone.
